Thanks to the proliferation of the Internet, the wedding photographers of today do not need to spend thousands of dollars in expensive advertising just so that they can sell their wares, so to speak.
As long as you have a camera, a passion for photographing newlywed couples and a small amount as a startup capital, you can turn wedding photography into a lucrative business. So how does the Internet come into play? This can be your primary means of advertising your services as a wedding photographer.
Basically, here's what I do.
On Facebook, I do have a couple of accounts. The first one I use purely for social networking. The second Facebook account that I have is of a personal and business nature. This is where I have my network of former clients and other photographers as my friends. I regularly update this account so that my former clients – who can recommend the services that I offer to other engaged couples – can view an online portfolio of my work.
I also have a blog which I regularly update with a couple of my favorite "Shots of the day". Finally, there's the official website that I have for my wedding photography business. Mind you, I wasn't able to afford having a website built from the ground up until I was well into my second year of being a full-time wedding photographer. Until then, the only things that I used to get by in terms of advertising are the Facebook accounts and blogs that I have.
As you can see, the Internet has played a big part in the way that I advertised my wedding photography business. For those of you who are just starting out in this field, you may still be in the stage of 'shadowing' professional photographers on the weddings that they cover – but you can harness the power of the Internet to start your growth as a business. Post your best work online so that engaged couples can see what you are all about as a wedding photographer. Combine this with building your reputation through word-of-mouth advertising and networking with everyone else who is involved in the wedding industry. With these tips, you can be well on your way towards making your wedding photography business grow.
